Every small town now has a camera that sees more than the people who live there. Here it hangs on something between a tree and a mast, like an eye on a stalk, above pink houses with dark windows, while a green path winds below, maybe a road, maybe a snake. In the foreground a large head with a face like a wooden mask, eyes barely open. Jan Eustachy Wolski lays the paint on so thickly that the houses look moulded from plasticine. The only open eye in this town belongs to the camera.
The painter
Jan Eustachy Wolski (born 1997) studied at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, where he lives and works. His painting follows the coexistence of different times in today's patchwork reality. He has had solo shows at Neue Alte Brücke in Frankfurt, Piktogram in Warsaw and Art : Concept in Paris, and his work has entered the Pinault Collection.
