Some sentences are said once, in public, so they never have to be repeated. The text for the 2020 exhibition of Mateusz Sarzyński and Konrad Żukowski at BWA Warszawa opened with the artist's own words: when he was fourteen, his father hanged himself, and without that he would probably never have become an artist. The painting shows a large face in profile, and across it runs a red shape with small figures in white shirts hanging from strings. The canvas was made twenty years after that day. That is how long it takes to fit on fifty centimetres.
The painter
Mateusz Sarzyński (born 1990) studied architecture at the Cracow University of Technology and painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. He received the Hestia Artistic Journey award in 2018. He has shown in group exhibitions including The Discomfort of Evening at Zachęta in Warsaw and Global Abomination, with Konrad Żukowski, at BWA Warszawa.
